ABOUT THE RESEARCH
Dr. Mariano Barbacid: Pioneer in molecular oncology
Dr. Mariano Barbacid is one of the most important scientists in the history of cancer research. He was the first to isolate a human oncogene (H-RAS) and to characterize its activation mechanism.
Currently, his team at the CNIO is working on new strategies to combat pancreatic cancer, a disease that affects more than 450,000 people worldwide each year.
His research focuses on developing therapies that inhibit the KRAS protein, present in 90% of pancreatic tumors, an advance that could revolutionize the treatment of this disease.
